CONNECTIONS BLOG

CONNECTIONS
Affinity. Closeness. Longing for connection. These shared experiences are what elevate our lives beyond mere existence. Good or bad, they are the muse for poetry, the rhythm of music, and the ‘heart’ in our heart. This body of work is about exploring just that: our humanity seen through how we connect with something outside ourselves. That moment when we bare our souls and open our hearts.

Summer Nights

Thirty years! Angela and I celebrated our anniversary recently at the lovely Bathers Pavilion in Balmoral. The atmosphere on a warm summer night was the perfect backdrop for a special evening with my sweetheart. We both love the casual elegance of Bathers and needless to say, the food as well. Serge and his team are behind one of Sydney’s gems!

Now I just need to convince them to let us have the upstairs as our studio and apartment!

Saxophones and Salty Air

Sometimes jobs don't feel like jobs. I guess the frequency of that indicates you are in the right profession! Last week I had the pleasure of  shooting for the cover of Amy Dickson’s new album of Australian saxophone concertos, to be released by ABC Classics in May 2015. It was a particular pleasure, as I photographed her for her first album several years ago.

Amy is a London-based Australian classical saxophone player,  awarded in 2013 with the #1 ranking in the UK classical charts. She and her music are the same; beautiful, real, and a joy to know.

Dog Days

Meet Samson, 11 years old, the best friend you could ask for. He is the most gentle companion who loves nothing more than being at your side. He gives far more love than you could imagine, and in the words of that wise person called Anonymous: "I aspire to be the person that my dog thinks I am."

If you ever make it down to the studio, he will be panting at the back door waiting to say hello.

Homocystinuria

Just the other week, I had the privilege to do a shoot for HCU Network Australia for their upcoming website release. HCU Network Australia is a recently established not-for-profit organisation dedicated to increasing awareness and research funds for a degenerative rare disease known as Homocystinuria (HCU).

Another reminder to hug the kids, the wife and the dog, count all our blessings, and do what we can to make someone else's journey a bit easier.

Where would your heart lead you?

“To move, to breathe, to fly, to float, To gain all while you give, To roam the roads of lands remote, To travel is to live.”

― Hans Christian Andersen

I love the feeling of escaping on a journey somewhere new, the magic of discovery. Where would your heart lead you?

Spring In Pennsylvania

Spring In Pennsylvania

We were shooting in Pennsylvania recently and had a chance to sneak a walk in one afternoon through some country lanes. The trees were just starting to bud. the sun was warm and I remembered how wonderful spring fever is! The moment when nature is waking up, the warmth of the sun starts to seep through the grips of Winter. The feeling that anything is now possible and beauty wins the day.

Flying High

Flying High

I flew to New York this week for a shoot, and as much as the jet lag wipes me out from crossing over to a different time zone, I am dazed by the view from the window. No matter how many times I catch a plane, I still can't get past how dreamlike and pristine the outlook from a small porthole can be.

Afoot and light-hearted, I take to the open road,
Healthy, free, the world before me,
The long brown path before me leading wherever I choose.

Back to the Basics

I think I mentioned in an earlier post that I'm doing a Masters in Art at COFA. I'm really enjoying the art history and the research into contemporary art practices. I am finding that art is like philosophy. It's there to ask a question, get the viewer thinking. It is not necessarily about creating a beautiful piece to hang on your wall. With my personal work I am finding that I want to jump in and execute an idea. What's interesting for me is trying to come from a more conceptual space to start with, and then think outside the box more and create work that is less obvious or literal, more thought provoking! Not too easy when you have in your mind to start with what you want to shoot!! We'll see where it takes me.

So in saying that here are some pretty pictures ;-) I would love to know what they evoke in you!

Inspired?

It's that time again for the Head On festival's ACMP exhibition in Centennial Park, with this years theme 'inspired'. I am really interested to know what can inspire someone. What inspires you?

How can an image impact someone? I find I react to simple, honest images that trigger something inside me. Does that mean I'm simple inside?? Maybe we react to something that we can relate to or we already feel something about.

I entered my seascapes because I love their beauty, the drama and the sense of something bigger than ourselves. Instead of supplying text I included song lyrics for each image.  I see the seascapes as an access and an illustration of feelings held inside; things that we may not wear on the surface but where our minds wander to in quiet times.

What inspires you?

Bronte

I finally got down to Bronte to do some seascapes. Someone special has been chasing me for a while ( you know who you are! ;-0) , and remembered how lovely a place it is!

I walked along the pool at dusk and saw a couple engaged in a heavy kiss, so I quickly turned around to give them some privacy and took some pics further down of the pool. A few minutes later two elderly people strolled past! Go Grandpa!!

Anyways as a teaser to the fine art stuff, here are a few snaps of the surroundings. I will post a few of the 'artworks' shots soon.
