CONNECTIONS BLOG

CONNECTIONS
Affinity. Closeness. Longing for connection. These shared experiences are what elevate our lives beyond mere existence. Good or bad, they are the muse for poetry, the rhythm of music, and the ‘heart’ in our heart. This body of work is about exploring just that: our humanity seen through how we connect with something outside ourselves. That moment when we bare our souls and open our hearts.

The Eye Of The Beholder

The International Color Awards are always an interesting mix of images. I’m chuffed to say I won 2nd place in the Merit of Excellence in the People category. Yippee!

The entries for the Colour Awards come from 79 countries across the globe so as they say at the Oscars, "its an honour to be nominated."  I'm excited to share that I received 7 nominations across 4 categories, the details are below. Its always difficult to predict what the judges are looking for so the selection of what to enter is sometimes half the battle.

"Longing" beams through the pages of Desktop Magazine

After a show in Sydney and now in Prague, Christian's latest exhibition Longing has hit the pages of Desktop Magazine. Sprawled across a 5 page spread, the article highlights Christian's interest in the idea that an image can evoke feelings and emotions in someone.

In case you missed the exhibition while it was still here in Sydney, Longing is a collection of work that showcases Christian's skill to enchant the viewer into a world of mystery and often unclear vision of the future

If you would like to hear more about the body of work and delve a little deeper into Christian's head as he discusses the processes and thoughts behind Longing, check out the link to the article below.

Passengers to the unknown

I've been spending a lot of time in airports this year. Maybe it's because I am a romantic, a sucker for a good story or have an overactive imagination but I love the collection of humanity and the myriad of stories an airport plays host to. Here are a few from the Hong Kong airport. I wonder what awaits this little boy with the aqua and green crocs?

Is the girl with the scarf enjoying a happy reunion with her boyfriend or a new friendship with the guy sitting across the aisle from her, who accidentally spurted his salad dressing on her when trying to open the packet at lunch?

AC8P2238And lastly, what is in all those cardboard boxes in the trolleys below? Herbal medicines, trinkets from the Mongkok markets or cash??? Hmmmm.....

to market, to market

Our shoot in Singapore is now over and I'm now well and truly in holiday mode. Time to immerse ourselves in the culture, smells, vibrancy and flavours of the local markets.  My wife Angela lived in Singapore as a child, so I'm gladly in her hands when she takes us to Lau Pa Sat markets. market Places like this are so inspiring. Simple food, done so effortlessly but so tasty. I feel so much more at home too, being where the locals eat, and trying something exotic. Well maybe not TOO exotic! So what do ya reckon guys, will you let me experiment in the kitchen when back home, or are some of my previous concoctions still burnt on your memory?!! (And I still think red Thai curry and blueberries is going to be the next big thing! You heard it here first ;-)  ) markets2

I Made Contact

After many years of contemplation and going back and forth I officially did it!! I bit the bullet and am represented by the talented team at Contacts Photography for my lifestyle work.  I'm really excited about this partnership expanding our production team and capabilities.

I was happily surprised to see it mentioned in Campaign Brief.....

Opening night....

One week to go to the opening night of my exhibition, save the date.

Join me for the opening of Longing on Mon 13 May from 6-8pm at the ArtHouse Hotel.

A big thank you to Lynda Howitt for designing my invites and to Head On for inviting me to be a part of the festival. Make sure you check it out. www.christianmushenko.com.

THE EXHIBITION: Longing references a quiet drama present in the photographs. They portray a light beyond darkness, a release into something beyond. Created without a lens, the images are not a ‘focussed’ view of the world, but a more basic response to light, and become abstract colour field images. This 'lack of focus' removes us from the actual subject in front of us. Instead it hints at the mysterious, often unclear vision of our futures, made up of our internal desires and a longing for what we don't have.

Your Beautiful Soul

Come see my latest collection of work, Your Beautiful Soul at Art Sydney this weekend. I have 2 free tickets to send to the first person to email me, christian@mushenko.com.au.

Show is open 10-4:30, October 14-16

Would love to see you there!

A collection of lush seascapes that mirror the drama and emotion of the human spirit. The ocean and sky are the canvas in abstract works of texture and colour that remind us of our vulnerability and belief, love and longing, life and a beautiful soul.

I'm excited to announce that I've published my first ever book to go along with the collection.  Take a look here. I'd love to know what you think.

AddOn

ADDON, is part of the current HeadOn Photo festival. I was proudly one of a few invited photographers, artists, and others contributing to an anonymous selection of works. On at Mary Place Gallery, it was a beautiful eclectic body of work, and a lot of fun to be part of. All the artworks were printed square in a small frame, and hung in a continuous line around the gallery. As a sort of adult lucky dip, artworks are swapped at the end of the exhibition.
