CONNECTIONS BLOG

CONNECTIONS
Affinity. Closeness. Longing for connection. These shared experiences are what elevate our lives beyond mere existence. Good or bad, they are the muse for poetry, the rhythm of music, and the ‘heart’ in our heart. This body of work is about exploring just that: our humanity seen through how we connect with something outside ourselves. That moment when we bare our souls and open our hearts.

"one thing leads to another"

These images are part of a series based on playing with the ideas of perception, truth and image.

The subject was actually a tower of found objects, such as buttons, plastic, bottles, fabric, and wire. Junk in other words.

By not photographing the junk but photographing the reflections and refractions of light onto and off the subject, we perceive a very different reality. Our point of view (specifically how the light sees and reacts to the objects) determines what we take away from our encounter.

Junk as beauty. One thing leads to another. Where one person sees junk another sees beauty.

Reflection of light

As a photographer I am continually mesmerised by light, how it falls, the form it takes etc. With these shots I experimented with reflecting light and expressing light as a colour, and an object . The results have an ephemeral beauty, and lushness to them. We 'feel' the light.

Lounging Around The Boat House

One of the best perks of living in Sydney is going to a beach in the morning for a swim and then breakfast. The Boat House in Balmoral is a fave.  A sister restaurant to one in Palm Beach, and soon to be Shelley Beach; it celebrates the summer lifestyle with fresh produce, coffee and an interesting menu. You will know we are there if you see Samson, our Golden Retriever tied up out the front!

Immersion

How amazing does it feel to swim in the ocean in the morning?! The sun streaming in, the water feeling like it is rejuvenating our every molecule! It leaves me smiling all day long! These pictures were taken early morning at Bronte recently. On a day like today, I'm plotting when I can next slip under the waves. 2015_01_0Y4A14782015_01_0Y4A16012015_01_0Y4A20992015_01_0Y4A2203

Dog Days

Meet Samson, 11 years old, the best friend you could ask for. He is the most gentle companion who loves nothing more than being at your side. He gives far more love than you could imagine, and in the words of that wise person called Anonymous: "I aspire to be the person that my dog thinks I am."

If you ever make it down to the studio, he will be panting at the back door waiting to say hello.

Collage-NEW

Homocystinuria

Just the other week, I had the privilege to do a shoot for HCU Network Australia for their upcoming website release. HCU Network Australia is a recently established not-for-profit organisation dedicated to increasing awareness and research funds for a degenerative rare disease known as Homocystinuria (HCU).

Another reminder to hug the kids, the wife and the dog, count all our blessings, and do what we can to make someone else's journey a bit easier.

New York New York!

Christian has been selected by SeeMe folio to have three of his photographs projected onto a skyscraper in Times Square, New York. On July 24th, 2014 from 8-9pm, SeeMe is taking over the two largest billboards in Times Square for one of the largest collaborative creative projects ever staged. The photos are from Christian's body of work entitled 'Beneath The Surface'. The intriguing images are a metaphor for unseen inner beauty and about perspective, a sympathetic gaze, and acceptance. Something the world needs more of today!

Sweet Plums

Sweet Plums

The Orchard Studio shot some tasty plums for The Good Rich Fruit Company recently. Queen Garnet is a plum that was developed by the Queensland Government using basic plant breeding methods. By using proprietary techniques to maximise antioxidant content, they have created a Plum that is 10 times higher in antioxidants than other plum varieties. They are a deeper richer crimson than most, and tasted pretty good!

Cuppa tea?

All you tea lovers need to keep your eyes peeled for Twinings' new range of silk loose leaf tea bags.  They certainly give T2 a run for their money. The client kindly let us keep samples after our shoot, our faves have been the peppermint and earl grey. The intense aroma from the bags was amazing, as they were so fresh. We are definitely converts! Here's what we shot. The brief was to create a lovely daylight feel. In order to keep consistent lighting throughout the day we built our own daylight set. See the before and after below.....

Shoot the Chef

The Orchard gang has been busy getting their submissions ready for Good Food's Shoot the Chef Competition. Christian shot chef Tom Walton from the Bucket List and Dani shot chef Michael Mu Sung from Farmhouse Kings Cross. How do you think they've done? Christian's Dawn of Man appears first, followed by Dani's Fishing 2 shot:

lets make it a Happy New Year!

I'd like to start off my first post of 2013 saying Happy New Year.  I'm not one for New Years Resolutions but I've made an exception this year, I'm going to strive to have more personal contact with my clients, friends and family. Let's spread some love people, and book those dinners, lunches, coffees in that we have been talking about for ages! All work and no play, well you know the rest.. Here's what I got up to over the break. Now come on people, let me know when you can come out sailing!!!

Shanghai in Willoughby

We shot for McDonald's China recently with the lovely people from Leo Burnett's Shanghai. The shoot was done in our new eco sustainable studio "The Orchard" in Willoughby.

We had fun shooting daylight, using light from 2 sides, balancing a sun that was forever moving in and out of clouds, shining directly and indirectly onto different windows as the days progressed.  There were fevered skype calls to Shanghai in Cantonese as the creative team was constantly liaising with the client. All good in the end, and the client was happy with the 'natural and real' feel of the shots.
