Affinity. Closeness. Longing for connection. These shared experiences are what elevate our lives beyond mere existence. Good or bad, they are the muse for poetry, the rhythm of music, and the ‘heart’ in our heart. This body of work is about exploring just that: our humanity seen through how we connect with something outside ourselves. That moment when we bare our souls and open our hearts.

Creating Beauty

I love this quote by Frederick Mayer: "We become creative when we realise the infinite possibilities within us, and when we understand that our function is not merely to exist but to contribute to life, to improve it, and to make it more meaningful to others." I was able to spend some time chatting with my good friend Lynda Howitt in her studio not far from New York recently. The cross fertilisation of ideas, making connections from different sensory inputs, exploring different views and metaphors for a subject with her was refreshing.

Lynda's beautiful abstract art work lets our imaginations soar with their emotional intensity, feeling to me what the chemistry of attraction might look like. I'm inspired to create some more beautiful abstract seascapes. I think a week at a little shack on a remote coastline somewhere would be perfect! Any suggestions for where?

Coney Island

"CRAZY BUT COOL" is how a friend described this place.  To be honest I didn't know how to describe my afternoon there, but that seems perfect. I think the only way is to take it for what it is and go with it! So yes, I did get my feet wet, the inevitable sand in my shorts and even ate a hot dog. Getting Clinical

Getting Clinical

Christian has just returned to Sydney after a busy week-long shoot in the US for a medical device manufacturing company in Pennsylvania. Christian was able to use his signature style of photography to shoot lifestyle and atmospherical images of the high-tech facilities. Christian shot everything from products to people and also the sterile assembly floors. An interesting task at hand seeing his assistant has a slight phobia of needles.

Spring In Pennsylvania

Spring In Pennsylvania

We were shooting in Pennsylvania recently and had a chance to sneak a walk in one afternoon through some country lanes. The trees were just starting to bud. the sun was warm and I remembered how wonderful spring fever is! The moment when nature is waking up, the warmth of the sun starts to seep through the grips of Winter. The feeling that anything is now possible and beauty wins the day.

Hollywood Hills

There's that old saying, you should never look back you should only look forward so contrary to that I's like to share our last big shoot of 2012 with you.

The Orchard Team ended the year on a high note with a successful shoot in Hollywood after a pretty gruelling work schedule. There wasn't a lot of time to see the sights, sleep or socialise but the client was happy and we worked with a fantastic team of people from Grey. Here are some pics of the house we rented in the Hollywood hills as a base. Thanks Tash for putting a pic of me power-napping in, but in my defence, this was after pulling an all-nighter!

Hollywood House

We were shooting sets in a studio as well as in outdoor locations. With rain for three of the five days our talented lighting tech, Nat Dinham and second shooter Nat Hunfalvay had their work cut out for them. Angela was kept busy file handling and keeping things rolling while I was shooting on the sets. A big thanks to all our team and our gorgeous clients and agency. Great shoot and results!

Kentucky Bourbon

For some people those two words are enough. But as I learnt from the tour around this very old, very historic, and very premium distillery, 'bourbon aint bourbon'. Woodford Reserve has a capacity that is tiny compared to the likes of Jim Beam, but is very hands on, and (supposedly) very premium. To be honest I am not a bourbon drinker, BUT IF I WAS, this would be the bourbon.....
