CONNECTIONS BLOG

CONNECTIONS
Affinity. Closeness. Longing for connection. These shared experiences are what elevate our lives beyond mere existence. Good or bad, they are the muse for poetry, the rhythm of music, and the ‘heart’ in our heart. This body of work is about exploring just that: our humanity seen through how we connect with something outside ourselves. That moment when we bare our souls and open our hearts.

Brooklyn

We recently spent a few days in Brooklyn, prepping for a shoot. It was fun exploring a new part of New York. Seeing the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge reminded me of sailing under it as a kid in the 60's on our way to Australia. What excitement there was at the start of that journey! Heading out to the ocean, leaving New York behind us, on the way to a new life in the wilds of Australia! All that I saw was the open ocean ahead, representing unlimited possibilities! I think that very moment in my life may have something to do with my love of the horizon and ocean today, and all the metaphors they produce. 4494_DCP_2023LowSat4494_DCP_2018LowSat2014_08_03_AC8P1735IMG_2907LowSat4494_DCP_2024LowSat

Creating Beauty

I love this quote by Frederick Mayer: "We become creative when we realise the infinite possibilities within us, and when we understand that our function is not merely to exist but to contribute to life, to improve it, and to make it more meaningful to others." I was able to spend some time chatting with my good friend Lynda Howitt in her studio not far from New York recently. The cross fertilisation of ideas, making connections from different sensory inputs, exploring different views and metaphors for a subject with her was refreshing.

Lynda's beautiful abstract art work lets our imaginations soar with their emotional intensity, feeling to me what the chemistry of attraction might look like. I'm inspired to create some more beautiful abstract seascapes. I think a week at a little shack on a remote coastline somewhere would be perfect! Any suggestions for where?

Coney Island

"CRAZY BUT COOL" is how a friend described this place.  To be honest I didn't know how to describe my afternoon there, but that seems perfect. I think the only way is to take it for what it is and go with it! So yes, I did get my feet wet, the inevitable sand in my shorts and even ate a hot dog. New York New York!

Christian has been selected by SeeMe folio to have three of his photographs projected onto a skyscraper in Times Square, New York. On July 24th, 2014 from 8-9pm, SeeMe is taking over the two largest billboards in Times Square for one of the largest collaborative creative projects ever staged. The photos are from Christian's body of work entitled 'Beneath The Surface'. The intriguing images are a metaphor for unseen inner beauty and about perspective, a sympathetic gaze, and acceptance. Something the world needs more of today!

From lepers to super heros...on the streets of New York

It's a special joy for photographers to shoot personal projects.  It's a great way for anyone to show their abilities outside the constraints of commissioned shoots and a great way to grow. We all enjoy checking out other people's personal work, as it gives us an insight to their style and interests.

My personal projects have been invaluable, and I've been nominated and won photography awards over the years using those images. Here's a few of my favourite personal projects.

NY street scenes

While in New York a few weeks ago for a job, of course my camera was with me wandering to meetings and walking about. I love the contrasts in Manhattan. Over the top window displays, faces full of character, some great jazz in the park, and buildings that always are interesting!

Ex July 2008 - Interesting South

(July 2008) Interesting South (a conference of 'interestingness') covers a wide variety of interesting and unexpected things. Christian had the opportunity to be one of this year's 19 fascinating people to speak for three or ten minutes about something they care about. Christian spoke about the extraordinary people he met in New York last year when he was producing this exhibition, 'Everyday Heros'. The people featured in Christian's shots were from all walks of life, but came together in Everyday Heros for the simple fact that they have made a difference to the lives of others and in turn their own. Here are a few of their stories
