CONNECTIONS BLOG

CONNECTIONS
Affinity. Closeness. Longing for connection. These shared experiences are what elevate our lives beyond mere existence. Good or bad, they are the muse for poetry, the rhythm of music, and the ‘heart’ in our heart. This body of work is about exploring just that: our humanity seen through how we connect with something outside ourselves. That moment when we bare our souls and open our hearts.

What makes a (Shanghai) home?

What makes a home or a community? The people, shared interests, the neighbourhood?

On a recent visit to Shanghai I wandered around an area being demolished to make way for new high-rise apartments. Buildings were left in various states of demolition, remnants of life still evident amongst graffiti, and even people still living in some areas.

An eerie beauty presided over the buildings left behind. Perhaps this was due to the infused memories of life, love and the dramas that they have seen.

The Eye Of The Beholder

The International Color Awards are always an interesting mix of images. I’m chuffed to say I won 2nd place in the Merit of Excellence in the People category. Yippee!

Beach Side Qingdao

The entries for the Colour Awards come from 79 countries across the globe so as they say at the Oscars, "its an honour to be nominated."  I'm excited to share that I received 7 nominations across 4 categories, the details are below. Its always difficult to predict what the judges are looking for so the selection of what to enter is sometimes half the battle.

Shanghai Charm

I had fun buzzing around Shanghai on my last trip, shooting some lifestyle pics depicting a romantic day for a young couple. I think we got some lovely moments.

I love Shanghai as it is so varied! From the old charm of the French Concession to the futuristic modernity and ultra premium feel of hotels in the Pudong. There is something interesting around each corner!

I think I’ll have to stay in the Ritz Carlton next trip, and have a more relaxed drink in their rooftop bar, Flair. It is pretty amazing!

A big thank you to my incredible team in Shanghai, Luca for styling and co-producing, Miki for hair and makeup, Oleg for photography assisting, and the models, John and Yanan from Essee Model Management. I hope to work with you again soon.

A Perfect Recipe

Here are some pics of my recent lifestyle shoot at Scotland Island, what a gorgeous setting.

Misty Sunrise

On my recent trip to Hong Kong, I stayed in Kowloon with some colleagues from Creative Asia Plus. I think I scored the pick of the rooms with a view of the sunrise out one window and the pool the other. [wpvideo rfXiTnnh]

I also got an insight to the shanty town that existed on top of the nearby buildings. That's what I love about Hong Kong: the mix of super-modern and very basic existence. On one block, you might see several stores selling Rolex's and not to far away a street market that looks not to different to what you might have seen last century.

Brooklyn

We recently spent a few days in Brooklyn, prepping for a shoot. It was fun exploring a new part of New York. Seeing the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge reminded me of sailing under it as a kid in the 60's on our way to Australia. What excitement there was at the start of that journey! Heading out to the ocean, leaving New York behind us, on the way to a new life in the wilds of Australia! All that I saw was the open ocean ahead, representing unlimited possibilities! I think that very moment in my life may have something to do with my love of the horizon and ocean today, and all the metaphors they produce. 4494_DCP_2023LowSat4494_DCP_2018LowSat2014_08_03_AC8P1735IMG_2907LowSat4494_DCP_2024LowSat

Getting Clinical

Getting Clinical

Christian has just returned to Sydney after a busy week-long shoot in the US for a medical device manufacturing company in Pennsylvania. Christian was able to use his signature style of photography to shoot lifestyle and atmospherical images of the high-tech facilities. Christian shot everything from products to people and also the sterile assembly floors. An interesting task at hand seeing his assistant has a slight phobia of needles.

Fashion at Cockatoo Island

Christian has always been one for helping out friends and a sucker for a good personal project. Recently he helped Yvonne Ling launch her fashion career with a fashion project shot in the enigmatic background of Cockatoo Island.

Wandering in Singapore

It doesn't matter how many times I visit Singapore, there's always something new to take in. I especially love the mix of the old with the new. I must say I love getting into the back streets and the markets of Little India and China Town. I'm really enjoying the ABC program, Serangoon Road which is set in the mid 60's in Singapore. Something about that era and my love of retro! Maybe for research I should stay at the Marina Bay Sands next time though! old-new

Ain't no churches here...

Although I wasn't there for long I still managed to satisfy my wanderlust and take these Hipstamatic shots.  Adelaide is known as the city of churches but for some reason I didn't capture any. Next time I'm sure...

We did catch up with our good friends Danny and Innez who run Adelaide's Top Food and Wine tours though. Great tour of Central Markets Saturday for breakfast!

Canberra

Got some culture the other day. Shot down to Canberra to shoot some food for a Hotel chain.  We had some free time to take in the National Portrait Gallery and walk on top of Parliament House. Beautiful crisp air, clean skies, and scenery. [slideshow]
