CONNECTIONS BLOG

CONNECTIONS
Affinity. Closeness. Longing for connection. These shared experiences are what elevate our lives beyond mere existence. Good or bad, they are the muse for poetry, the rhythm of music, and the ‘heart’ in our heart. This body of work is about exploring just that: our humanity seen through how we connect with something outside ourselves. That moment when we bare our souls and open our hearts.

Reflection of light

As a photographer I am continually mesmerised by light, how it falls, the form it takes etc. With these shots I experimented with reflecting light and expressing light as a colour, and an object . The results have an ephemeral beauty, and lushness to them. We 'feel' the light.

I've been exploring transparency and reflection recently; the relationship between the subject and medium, the meaning and the means.  My goal was to express colour as light, and show the luminous nature of light. These photos were all created in camera (not photoshop). Hopefully after the art babble above, the results are interesting photographs.

The Eye Of The Beholder

The International Color Awards are always an interesting mix of images. I’m chuffed to say I won 2nd place in the Merit of Excellence in the People category. Yippee!

Beach Side Qingdao

The entries for the Colour Awards come from 79 countries across the globe so as they say at the Oscars, "its an honour to be nominated."  I'm excited to share that I received 7 nominations across 4 categories, the details are below. Its always difficult to predict what the judges are looking for so the selection of what to enter is sometimes half the battle.

Dive In

Come dive with me into the warm Pacific. It is so beautiful starting the day with a salt water champagne bath this time of year. A weekend morning swim, followed up by breakfast at the beach makes me smile for the rest of the day!

Immersion

How amazing does it feel to swim in the ocean in the morning?! The sun streaming in, the water feeling like it is rejuvenating our every molecule! It leaves me smiling all day long! These pictures were taken early morning at Bronte recently. On a day like today, I'm plotting when I can next slip under the waves. 2015_01_0Y4A14782015_01_0Y4A16012015_01_0Y4A20992015_01_0Y4A2203

Misty Sunrise

On my recent trip to Hong Kong, I stayed in Kowloon with some colleagues from Creative Asia Plus. I think I scored the pick of the rooms with a view of the sunrise out one window and the pool the other. [wpvideo rfXiTnnh]

I also got an insight to the shanty town that existed on top of the nearby buildings. That's what I love about Hong Kong: the mix of super-modern and very basic existence. On one block, you might see several stores selling Rolex's and not to far away a street market that looks not to different to what you might have seen last century.

Saxophones and Salty Air

Sometimes jobs don't feel like jobs. I guess the frequency of that indicates you are in the right profession! Last week I had the pleasure of  shooting for the cover of Amy Dickson’s new album of Australian saxophone concertos, to be released by ABC Classics in May 2015. It was a particular pleasure, as I photographed her for her first album several years ago.

Amy is a London-based Australian classical saxophone player,  awarded in 2013 with the #1 ranking in the UK classical charts. She and her music are the same; beautiful, real, and a joy to know.

The Bold and Beautiful

There is nothing like a crisp sunny morning swim to get the day started. I went for a quick one Sunday morning in the warm water of Manly. At 7am there you will find a multitude of people all wearing bright pink caps, preparing themselves to dive head first into crystal clear water for a 1.5km swim. What started as an informal activity between a group of friends, has now turned into hundreds of people every day. The group, know as the 'Bold & Beautiful' leave from Manly Beach and swim over to Shelly Beach. The wonderful thing about this group is the camaraderie that they share. They wait at Shelly Beach until the last swimmer has arrived before embarking on the return trip.

So I'm thinking I should get a pink swimming cap on and join in... Will I see you there?

Breathe

As the weather warms up in Sydney, we're all being seduced by the sparkling Pacific. Funny how the warmth of the sun, and the diamonds floating on the water work their way into our happy hearts! So now's a good time to share a little video art work I did last year. [vimeo 106891306 w=500 h=281]

Entitled "Breathe", this video is an observation of the human condition and our place in the universe. It looks at the sublime power of forces bigger than ourselves. Water and light being elemental and a metaphor for life and death. Hinting at the fragility, the ebb and flow, and the powerful beauty of what we are part of. Filmed at Curl Curl surf pool in Sydney at dawn, with some wild atmospheric sound recorded at the Bower rock pool on a calm day. Overlaid onto various points of the action in the footage, are sounds created from helio-seismology. This is vibrations or oscillations on the sun's surface created by pulsation modes due to explosions on and in the sun measured by doppler imaging. These are processed to speed up and transpose into the human hearing range and filter out different frequencies. I used several different processed versions for different effects.

Where would your heart lead you?

“To move, to breathe, to fly, to float, To gain all while you give, To roam the roads of lands remote, To travel is to live.”

― Hans Christian Andersen

I love the feeling of escaping on a journey somewhere new, the magic of discovery. Where would your heart lead you?

Brooklyn

We recently spent a few days in Brooklyn, prepping for a shoot. It was fun exploring a new part of New York. Seeing the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge reminded me of sailing under it as a kid in the 60's on our way to Australia. What excitement there was at the start of that journey! Heading out to the ocean, leaving New York behind us, on the way to a new life in the wilds of Australia! All that I saw was the open ocean ahead, representing unlimited possibilities! I think that very moment in my life may have something to do with my love of the horizon and ocean today, and all the metaphors they produce. 4494_DCP_2023LowSat4494_DCP_2018LowSat2014_08_03_AC8P1735IMG_2907LowSat4494_DCP_2024LowSat

Creating Beauty

I love this quote by Frederick Mayer: "We become creative when we realise the infinite possibilities within us, and when we understand that our function is not merely to exist but to contribute to life, to improve it, and to make it more meaningful to others." I was able to spend some time chatting with my good friend Lynda Howitt in her studio not far from New York recently. The cross fertilisation of ideas, making connections from different sensory inputs, exploring different views and metaphors for a subject with her was refreshing.

Lynda's beautiful abstract art work lets our imaginations soar with their emotional intensity, feeling to me what the chemistry of attraction might look like. I'm inspired to create some more beautiful abstract seascapes. I think a week at a little shack on a remote coastline somewhere would be perfect! Any suggestions for where?

QingDao Beach

Recently I had the pleasure of being shown around the northern Chinese city of Qingdao. It’s a port town that hosted the sailing during the Beijing Olympics, and has some beaches around it’s coastline that people flock from miles to enjoy. From Sydney’s standards the beaches don’t look like much. However it was great to see how everyone responds the same to the freedom of getting out in nature, the lure of the coast, and the joy the beach seems to hold within its sand and waves.

With all the strife in the world today, maybe we should just give the trouble makers some plastic toys, a cold drink, some swimmers and plop them into the sand at the beach.

Shanghai

Wandering around Shanghai recently, I was struck by how everyone seems to have not just a mobile phone, but an expensive smart phone at that! China is now the world’s biggest user of smartphones, and apparently they like them because they can use them ‘without being seen easily.”

Maybe they’re checking out their selfies they took earlier!?

New York New York!

Christian has been selected by SeeMe folio to have three of his photographs projected onto a skyscraper in Times Square, New York. On July 24th, 2014 from 8-9pm, SeeMe is taking over the two largest billboards in Times Square for one of the largest collaborative creative projects ever staged. The photos are from Christian's body of work entitled 'Beneath The Surface'. The intriguing images are a metaphor for unseen inner beauty and about perspective, a sympathetic gaze, and acceptance. Something the world needs more of today!

Prague Pubs

With the weather turning cooler here, I think of sitting around the fire, and remember some nice pub meals in Prague: beer, meat and dumplings! I'm feeling warmer already!

It is also quite amazing to see that no matter where you are in the world, people love to take photos of their food... hold on, that's me.

Beneath The surface

It's getting a bit colder outside now, but 2 weeks ago I got in the warm water at dawn. The silvery water, the joy of rolling around in the surf, and the sun adding its magic creeping through the water was a perfect start to the day. Queue the music now...

Spring In Pennsylvania

Spring In Pennsylvania

We were shooting in Pennsylvania recently and had a chance to sneak a walk in one afternoon through some country lanes. The trees were just starting to bud. the sun was warm and I remembered how wonderful spring fever is! The moment when nature is waking up, the warmth of the sun starts to seep through the grips of Winter. The feeling that anything is now possible and beauty wins the day.
