CONNECTIONS BLOG

CONNECTIONS
Affinity. Closeness. Longing for connection. These shared experiences are what elevate our lives beyond mere existence. Good or bad, they are the muse for poetry, the rhythm of music, and the ‘heart’ in our heart. This body of work is about exploring just that: our humanity seen through how we connect with something outside ourselves. That moment when we bare our souls and open our hearts.

The Eye Of The Beholder

The International Color Awards are always an interesting mix of images. I’m chuffed to say I won 2nd place in the Merit of Excellence in the People category. Yippee!

Beach Side Qingdao

The entries for the Colour Awards come from 79 countries across the globe so as they say at the Oscars, "its an honour to be nominated."  I'm excited to share that I received 7 nominations across 4 categories, the details are below. Its always difficult to predict what the judges are looking for so the selection of what to enter is sometimes half the battle.

Saxophones and Salty Air

Sometimes jobs don't feel like jobs. I guess the frequency of that indicates you are in the right profession! Last week I had the pleasure of  shooting for the cover of Amy Dickson’s new album of Australian saxophone concertos, to be released by ABC Classics in May 2015. It was a particular pleasure, as I photographed her for her first album several years ago.

Amy is a London-based Australian classical saxophone player,  awarded in 2013 with the #1 ranking in the UK classical charts. She and her music are the same; beautiful, real, and a joy to know.

From lepers to super heros...on the streets of New York

It's a special joy for photographers to shoot personal projects.  It's a great way for anyone to show their abilities outside the constraints of commissioned shoots and a great way to grow. We all enjoy checking out other people's personal work, as it gives us an insight to their style and interests.

My personal projects have been invaluable, and I've been nominated and won photography awards over the years using those images. Here's a few of my favourite personal projects.

Ongoing Hair Affair

Check it out, our So You Think You Can Dance shoot has graced the pages of Hair Biz magazine, issue 33.

The video by Peter Nizic is also now on YouTube. It looks fabulous! We pretty proud of our role as lighting director. What do you think?

A Regal Abode

I was recently asked to pitch for my favourite hotel in Hong Kong, The Regal Hotel. The Mushenko team stayed there for five whole weeks in 2008 whilst we were doing a rebrand for McDonald's Asia. It felt like home and the staff really looked after us. I've got fond memories of the rooftop pool and 5pm happy hours. We were shooting at 6am every morning so the canapés at happy hour were often dinner.  Thanks to Lucas Boyd for his help with this pic.

Inspired?

It's that time again for the Head On festival's ACMP exhibition in Centennial Park, with this years theme 'inspired'. I am really interested to know what can inspire someone. What inspires you?

How can an image impact someone? I find I react to simple, honest images that trigger something inside me. Does that mean I'm simple inside?? Maybe we react to something that we can relate to or we already feel something about.

I entered my seascapes because I love their beauty, the drama and the sense of something bigger than ourselves. Instead of supplying text I included song lyrics for each image.  I see the seascapes as an access and an illustration of feelings held inside; things that we may not wear on the surface but where our minds wander to in quiet times.

What inspires you?

The Makings of 'So You Think You Can Dance'

Here are some shots of Team English in action.   The Orchard Studio was buzzing with activity for the So You Think You Can Dance shoot. It was all systems go.

Dawn of the day

Another beautiful morning down at Balmoral. I love observing the passing parade and everyone's morning routines.  At first I couldn't tell whether my new friend Geoff was feeding the seagulls or the fish, turns out it was the fish. It was a gorgeous spectacle.  We had a bit of a chat, swapped life stories and then both headed off to work. Life is what you make it.

A Hair Affair To Remember...

I had a pretty crazy and amazing shoot last week with Stevie English Hair.  The shots were ultra sexy and edgy, Verity, the very talented art director/stylist went all out on the concept.  Unfortunately I can't unveil any of the shots until June after the judging of Australia's Hair Expo so here's a shot from the 2010 expo, also shot with Verity. Stay tuned...

Bringing out your competitive streak

AddOn

ADDON, is part of the current HeadOn Photo festival. I was proudly one of a few invited photographers, artists, and others contributing to an anonymous selection of works. On at Mary Place Gallery, it was a beautiful eclectic body of work, and a lot of fun to be part of. All the artworks were printed square in a small frame, and hung in a continuous line around the gallery. As a sort of adult lucky dip, artworks are swapped at the end of the exhibition.

Color Awards nominations

(June 2010) Four of Christian's images were nominated in this years 4th Annual Photography Masters Cup.
