CONNECTIONS BLOG

CONNECTIONS
Affinity. Closeness. Longing for connection. These shared experiences are what elevate our lives beyond mere existence. Good or bad, they are the muse for poetry, the rhythm of music, and the ‘heart’ in our heart. This body of work is about exploring just that: our humanity seen through how we connect with something outside ourselves. That moment when we bare our souls and open our hearts.

New York New York!

Christian has been selected by SeeMe folio to have three of his photographs projected onto a skyscraper in Times Square, New York. On July 24th, 2014 from 8-9pm, SeeMe is taking over the two largest billboards in Times Square for one of the largest collaborative creative projects ever staged. The photos are from Christian's body of work entitled 'Beneath The Surface'. The intriguing images are a metaphor for unseen inner beauty and about perspective, a sympathetic gaze, and acceptance. Something the world needs more of today!

Getting Clinical

Getting Clinical

Christian has just returned to Sydney after a busy week-long shoot in the US for a medical device manufacturing company in Pennsylvania. Christian was able to use his signature style of photography to shoot lifestyle and atmospherical images of the high-tech facilities. Christian shot everything from products to people and also the sterile assembly floors. An interesting task at hand seeing his assistant has a slight phobia of needles.

Cuppa tea?

All you tea lovers need to keep your eyes peeled for Twinings' new range of silk loose leaf tea bags.  They certainly give T2 a run for their money. The client kindly let us keep samples after our shoot, our faves have been the peppermint and earl grey. The intense aroma from the bags was amazing, as they were so fresh. We are definitely converts! Here's what we shot. The brief was to create a lovely daylight feel. In order to keep consistent lighting throughout the day we built our own daylight set. See the before and after below.....

A few shots revealed from my shoot in Singapore at Raffles Hotel.

We had a lot of fun on this shoot. The iconic Raffles was a gorgeous backdrop for these elegant photos in my signature silky and romantic style. If you haven't ever stayed there, it should be on your bucket list ;-). The hotel staff were the most genuinely friendly and wonderful people. I'm not surprised the hotel is listed as one of the world's best.

One thing that was challenging for the shoot was the humidity, something I'm not used to coming from Sydney.  My lens would fog up when I'd walk outdoors from the air-conditioned rooms. My local team, Winnie and Hanna had their work cut out for them with keeping the models' hair from frizzing, powdering away the perspiration and preventing the clothes from looking saturated.  They did a really good job! Our models Katie and Sol I'm sure you will agree were stunning! Thanks to everyone involved for a great result!

Jamie Durie in hot water?

I recently worked with Sherlock Creative shooting some stills for a Zip Hydrotap commercial staring Jamie Durie.  It was shot in a gorgeous house in Avalon which is always a fantastic way to spend the day. I've worked with Jamie before and he's a friendly and very down to earth guy. The hydrotap itself was pretty extravagant providing boiling water, sparkling water and ice-cold water on tap. That would be very handy in the studio. Here are some behind the scene shots and stills I took and here's the commercial.

Our Burger Secrets Revealed...

Have you ever wondered why burgers in ads look so different to the ones you buy from the fast food chains? We had A Current Affair in the studio recently showcasing the food styling process and how we shoot the burgers you see in McDonald's ads. Click the image below and check out the ACA footage of Jacqui and I in action at the Orchard Studio: http://soc.li/6pIyNdb

I liken it to a first date, getting dressed up, putting on a push up bra, applying the lippy and eyeliner etc. (well, maybe not all of the above, I don’t do the push up bra and lippy too much these days). In the case of the burgers, all the ingredients are shown at the front, so you can see what you get. Only real ingredients are used in the actual quantities. But of course being advertising, we take great care in showing it off in its best light. In store they don’t have the same time to make each burger like we do on a shoot.

What's your take on it? Here are some of the behind the scenes shots......

Have you seen my Aussie Apples Campaign?

You may have already seen these around but if not, here are some tear sheets of the Australian Apples campaign I shot with the Mushenko team. It was lots of fun and brought back lots of beautiful memories of my childhood (most of you know I grew up on an apple orchard in Massachusetts).

Many thanks to John and Reggie at PineCrest and Cedric at Bilpin Springs Orchards.  We had a great time in Bilpin exploring our creativity.  All work and no play makes a dull day.

A Regal Abode

I was recently asked to pitch for my favourite hotel in Hong Kong, The Regal Hotel. The Mushenko team stayed there for five whole weeks in 2008 whilst we were doing a rebrand for McDonald's Asia. It felt like home and the staff really looked after us. I've got fond memories of the rooftop pool and 5pm happy hours. We were shooting at 6am every morning so the canapés at happy hour were often dinner.  Thanks to Lucas Boyd for his help with this pic.

Shanghai in Willoughby

We shot for McDonald's China recently with the lovely people from Leo Burnett's Shanghai. The shoot was done in our new eco sustainable studio "The Orchard" in Willoughby.

We had fun shooting daylight, using light from 2 sides, balancing a sun that was forever moving in and out of clouds, shining directly and indirectly onto different windows as the days progressed.  There were fevered skype calls to Shanghai in Cantonese as the creative team was constantly liaising with the client. All good in the end, and the client was happy with the 'natural and real' feel of the shots.

Ex December 2009- McDonald's here, there, and everywhere!

(December 2009) McDonald’s has kept the studio busy this year (anyone NOT seen their recent marketing should get new glasses!). Also watch out for the Veri Deli range of biscuits by Goodman Fielder in your supermarkets. We in the studio have well and truly taste tested lots of photography samples, and can recommend them.

Ex 2009- Shooting McDonald's for Asia

(September 2009) Christian (with a hand selected team) spent a month in Hong Kong recently, shooting food  for McDonald’s new menu boards across most of Asia. The team at ARC were great, we tried some cool local menu items, and obviously some fun was had on set also recreating the menu items in blu-tak!

Ex July 2008- Mushenko Shot Featured in Bronze Lion Winner at Cannes Lions 2008

(July 2008) A DDB Sydney McDonald's outdoor campaign featuring a shot by Christian has taken out a Bronze Lion at Cannes this year. Congratulations to the team at DDB for this win and for all the other gongs they took out this year! http://adoholik.com/index.php?tag=mcdonald
