Blog - Connections

Affinity. Closeness. Longing for connection. These shared experiences are what elevate our lives beyond mere existence. Good or bad, they are the muse for poetry, the rhythm of music, and the ‘heart’ in our heart. This body of work is about exploring just that: our humanity seen through how we connect with something outside ourselves. That moment when we bare our souls and open our hearts.

Beam in thine own eye

The Orchard team are back from this years AIPP Event in Hobart and feeling very inspired. It was the perfect combination of motivating seminars, exciting workshops and fabulous parties. Our minds and tummies were equally bursting at the seams by the time we left. At the Kayell dinner on our final night in Hobart, all the photographers were given the challenge of conjuring up the most creative photo using the new Ice light. Suddenly people were lying under tables, sliding down staircases, it was very funny to watch.

Deciding to take it up a notch, the Orchard team said no to coffee and quickly exited the dinner party in search of Rjoyi Ikeda's Spectra, an outdoor installation for the Mona Gallery's Dark Mofo exhibition.

From a distance the Spectra looked like a single light beam shining into the sky, surprisingly up close it was 49 military grade search lights arranged in a perfect grid creating a 15km tower of light into the sky, piercing through the layers of clouds, continuing up to the heavens. Amazing. To add to the sensory experience our movements created sound waves so intense it felt like we were cocooned in a humming vortex, with the rain looking like snow falling down on us. It was a beautiful outer-worldly, almost religious experience. 'Beam me up, Scotty!'
